visionarysoul: tragic mages
Let's talk about Mel and Hwei. If Mel and Jayce are twin flames, then Mel and Hwei are soulmates to me. Terribly accurate mirrors of each other, and the only ones who truly see each other. Their ship is abouts self-recognition/love through the other, which is why they compliment one another so, because they understand one another and see the 'real' version of them.
Walk with me, Mel and Hwei are two people from dark backgrounds and tumultuous relationships with their mentor/parents. They experience guilt, and self loathing because they feel powerless against their loss. They turn to the paintbrush and canvas, sublimate trauma through art. They are both creatures of duality. Creatures of a similar magic. Both of them are deeply in touch with the emotions of others, and yet cannot understand themselves. The two of them are also discovering who they are and what they are capable of.

Hwei is at war with his emotions the darkness and light of his heart, and Mel is conflicted about her magic (calling herself tainted) and her desire for peace despite her Noxian upbringing. They can help each other to embrace and understand the parts of themselves they believe are tainted.
Mel being a person of inaction in her own life, and therefore in the life of others (specifically Zaunites), and sort of becoming passive in her idealism, and therefore betraying her own beliefs. She speaks of progress but she is stuck in that throne room where she is fifteen and a girl with the color of her eyes is killed before her.

Hwei is passive in his own life, and blames everything on that he does on what has happened to him. But he doesn’t take charge to change his story, his reality, but changes things and relieves the suffering of others. Yet Hwei is stuck in his own suffering and outside of it can hardly find his own reason for living.

They are tortured artists mages who struggle with their guilt and internal conflict over the duality of light and darkness within them…. Melhwei you will always be famous to me. Ambessa (and to some extent, Leblanc) being to Mel what Jhin is to Hwei. The architects of their misery, the force that eats away at their light.

And if they try to escape, their magic traps them further….. Instead of freeing them, empowering them, their magic has made them targets. Therefore, their story, their struggle is mirrored in each other.

Look at Mel's lines to Hwei:
